Now in its 17th year, the Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival is not only one of Taiwan’s two major Lantern Festival folk events but has also risen to join the ranks of the world’s most eye-catching carnivals. It has been highly recommended by international media such as the renowned American travel channel Discovery and CNN, attracting visitors from across the nation and around the globe every year. This year, the New Taipei City Government has prepared more than 3,600 lanterns for free release, ensuring the beautiful sight of lanterns filling the sky takes center stage on the global stage.

● Happy Sheep Fill the Sky on the Fourth Day (2February 22)
With the arrival of the Year of the Sheep, the first event of the “2015 New Taipei City Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival” kicks off with the timely Happy Sheep cartoon lanterns. On February 22, the fourth day of the Lunar New Year, at Jing Tong Elementary School event venue, you can see adorable scenes of Happy Sheep and other cartoon characters flying into the sky with the lanterns.

※ Those wishing to release the 4TN cartoon-themed lanterns can register starting at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, February 3, at the New Taipei City Tourism Website (http://tour.ntpc.gov.tw/). There are 60 group slots available and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.

● Hot Air Balloon Lanterns Soar on the Ninth Day (2February 27)
The New Taipei City Government has collaborated for the first time with Taitung County Government to combine the tourism highlights of both regions and introduce hot air balloon sky lanterns – one representing hope carried by a lantern, the other a hot air balloon fulfilling the dream of flight. Currently, this uniquely designed large hot air balloon sky lantern is being finalized. On February 27 (Friday), the ninth day of the Lunar New Year, the public can watch it ascend slowly at Pingxi Junior High School.

※ Participants in this year’s Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival lantern release are reminded to keep their lantern release vouchers. With the voucher, they can exchange for a small gift at the service desk of Luye Gaotai during the Taiwan International Hot Air Balloon Festival. There is also a chance to win a hot air balloon free-flight experience worth NT$9,000 – with three such prizes available.
