Totoro Makes an Appearance at Mashagou Sand Sculpture Exhibition, Embracing Nostalgia

As summer arrives, not to be outshone by the Fulong International Sand Sculpture Art Festival, the Mashagou Sand Sculpture Exhibition grandly opened on June 20 and is expected to run until the end of August. Featuring six major themed sand sculptures centered around cross-generational anime characters, it aims to create a classic nostalgic sand sculpture coastal amusement park. In addition, it has built the largest water park in southern Taiwan, offering water slides and other aquatic facilities, inviting everyone to come together for a cool summer!

This year’s Mashagou Sand Sculpture Exhibition highlights a nostalgic theme,6with the six major sand sculptures featuring widely recognized anime protagonists; the largest piece, standing4meters tall and6-7meters wide, is themed “A Battle of Justice Fought with Passion” and includes superheroes from the childhoods of those born in the 1960s and 70s such as Mazinger Z and Gatchaman, as well as Dragon Ball inspired by Journey to the West, and Bread Head, who has40years of history and exudes a strong retro vibe. Located at the entrance of the sandy beach, it allows visitors to see these “sand”-level artworks right away.

Other themes include “Shared Love for Local Taiwanese Flavor,” starring the nationally beloved glove puppet show-Cloud Gate Grand Sage, with characters like Shi Yanwen, Zang Jingren, as well as pioneers of local comics like Zhuge Silang, Uncle A-San, and Auntie Granny. “Shared Girlhood Fantasies” spotlights classic Sailor Moon characters like Usagi, Rini, and Hello Kitty. “Shared Emotional Connections” centers on Little Yuan’s Story and Snowy the Brave Dog. “Shared Team Camaraderie” showcases the hilarious and action-packed Slam Dunk and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. “Shared Fantastical Dreams” draws inspiration from the Japanese animated film My Neighbor Totoro and the universally loved Doraemon. The six major themes bring together a collection of nostalgic anime, glove puppetry, and classic characters across generations, full of childlike fun, taking everyone on a trip down memory lane.

Additionally, besides the lifelike sand sculptures, there are also popular water activities such as bubble soccer, water slides, splash pools, space balls, donut floats, and double inflatable boats. This year, the park has added many new water facilities, aiming to turn Mashagou into a large-scale water park in southern Taiwan, providing visitors with a fun and cooling water-based playground.
