And the Xie Residence, located within the old market, is just like the city itself—not just an old house for accommodation, but a place where every detail reveals the life moments and stories of the Xie family.

The Tainan Xie Residence is situated right inside the declining Dacai Market. Stepping into the old market, you’ll find Western-style clothing shops, fabric stores, and old snack shops still living their daily routines as they always have. It’s a time-space that preserves the memories of the old market and also the starting point for experiencing the local life essence of Tainan residents. The homeowner, Xie Xiaowu, restored the old house by preserving most of its original structure, old window frames, furniture, and more, while also incorporating green building concepts of energy saving and environmental protection. For each floor and main space of the old house, at least three models were made. Once you climb up60the steep stairs, you’ll discover the owner’s thoughtful design everywhere between the floors. On the second floor, there’s a raised small loft filled with books, offering a comfortable spot for reading. It also serves as a living room, and you can still find the old sewing machine once used by the previous owner’s mother quietly tucked away in the corner—it still works to this day. The third floor is an open-air terrace, perfect for enjoying the cool air and the beauty of the sky. As for the fourth floor, it’s a large shared dormitory for guests, featuring tatami mats crafted by master artisans. These mats not only emit the natural fragrance of straw but also ensure a restful sleep without back pain.
