Located offshore in western Taiwan, between China and Taiwan, Penghu Island is one of the 64 islands that include Taiwan. Covering an area of 127 square kilometers with a total population of 100,000, the county-administered city of Penghu is Magong City.
Fishermen from the coastal regions of mainland China were the first to settle on Penghu Island as early as the 2nd century. In 1388, due to Ming Dynasty policies, residents evacuated the island. It remained uninhabited for centuries until people from the mainland returned in the 18th century. From the 19th century to the present, Penghu Island has been successively occupied by France, Japan, and China.

Although not far from Taipei, Penghu Island differs from Taiwan’s main island.
