The nearly 40-year-old "King Crocodile of Matou" in Tainan announced it will cease operations on January 23, 2016, and declared that from now until closing, Tainan residents can visit for free by showing their ID cards.

The King Crocodile of Matou in Tainan has been operating locally for 39 years. Founded by Qiu Xihé, it was once a frequent guest on TV variety shows and thus became widely known. The park housed crocodiles and many rare animals, among which the 1,250 Taiwan-jin (about 750 kg) giant crocodile "Xiao He" was a must-see animal star. Recently, King Crocodile of Matou stated that due to the introduction of stricter new animal protection laws, operational pressures have increased, and the previously eye-catching crocodile performance shows can no longer be held, resulting in visitor numbers far below previous levels. It announced that it will officially cease operations on January 23, 2016. Over the next six months, arrangements will be made to relocate the existing animals one by one. As for the star "Xiao He," plans are to send him abroad. The news has already drawn many visitors coming to take photos with Xiao He as a memento.
