August and September are the peak months for golden needle flowers, when vast yellow blooms blanket the nearby slopes and distant valleys, creating one of Taiwan’s most dazzling summer landscapes. Besides the famous Liushishi Mountain and Chikeshan in Hualien, flower enthusiasts can also head to Nantou’s Toushe Living Basin to admire the “dancing golden needle flower sea”!

Nantou’s Toushe Living Basin golden needle flowers are at their most vibrant from the seventh lunar month to the Mid-Autumn Festival each year. Though not as expansive as the eastern golden needle flower seas, the two-hectare field of golden-yellow blooms surrounded by green mountains offers a unique charm. Additionally, as the Toushe community was once a lake basin, the soft peat soil left behind after the water dried up creates a bouncy effect underfoot, making the golden needle flowers planted above seem to dance—earning them the delightful nickname “dancing golden needle flowers.”

This year, the Toushe golden needle flowers are in excellent condition, and thanks to the protection of the surrounding basin, they were unaffected by typhoons. The best viewing period runs from now until the end of September. Admission is 100 NTD, and visitors receive 150 grams of freshly picked golden needle flowers. The site also offers eco-guided tours—don’t miss this flowering season to go flower-viewing.
