The Wanjin Christmas Light Show Debuts, Showcasing the Splendor of Pingtung’s Four Seasons

December brings the festive spirit of Christmas to life in every corner, with the iconic red-and-green palette and Christmas-themed art installations creating a joyful atmosphere. This year’s highly anticipated Wanjin Christmas Light Show debuted on the 10th. The light show opened with a Genesis theme and specially incorporated major seasonal festivals in Pingtung, including the Black Tuna Festival, Mango Festival, Wild Ginger Flower Festival, Harvest Festival, Sihchongxi Hot Spring Festival, and Hakka Cannon Fort Challenge, showcasing the diverse highlights of Pingtung across spring, summer, autumn, and winter.

The Wanjin Christmas Light Show uses the façade of the century-old Wanjin Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary as its canvas. Through the magic of light projection technology, it tells the rich cultural stories of Pingtung, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. This year’s show integrates local specialties and ethnic cultural festivals, offering audiences a chance to discover the many facets of Pingtung through light and shadow. The light show begins with sacred and solemn religious tales, then journeys through Pingtung in different seasons. In spring, the meeting of Donggang black tuna and sakura shrimp is highlighted, along with a visit to the Fangshan Mango Festival to experience the bounty of the harvest season. Summer invites travelers to bike through the Wild Ginger Flower Festival or take part in the bountiful Manzhou Flying Fish Festival and Indigenous Harvest Festivals. As autumn turns to winter, the Sihchongxi Hot Springs provide a soothing retreat, and as the year draws to a close, the show transitions to Hakka villages where the “Cannon Fort Challenge” welcomes the New Year. The grand finale is Pingtung’s heartwarming Christmas season, with the Wanjin Basilica transformed into a dreamy wonderland. Through ever-changing light and sound effects, a vibrant Christmas ambiance unfolds. The show aims to offer a spiritual renewal through its religious themes, bidding farewell to the old year and welcoming the new — may everyone find new happiness in the year ahead.

The Wanjin Christmas Season kicks off with the lighting ceremony on December 10th and runs through December 24th, with shows held every Saturday and Sunday from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Each performance lasts 10 minutes. To accommodate religious activities at the Wanjin Basilica, the screening schedule varies daily and may be adjusted based on on-site conditions.A special performance will also take place at 11:50 PM on Christmas Eve, the 24th.
