Tainan’s Cutest “Heart-Shaped” Egg Cake – Bite into It and Discover Rich Taro Filling

The shapes of egg cakes in Tainan are really diverse—there are tool-shaped, egg-shaped, cat-paw-shaped ones, and Fat Bi even spotted heart-shaped ones. Each one is just so adorable~ Though they have pointy tops, which might be another fun aspect of eating egg cakes. Looking at these cute shapes somehow lifts your mood.

I’ve had Want to Eat Egg Cake on my list for a while now, but sometimes when I’m slacking off at work, I don’t make it all the way there. Finally, during a holiday, I got to try it. The little street stall is located at the alley entrance of 50 Lan on Nanmen Road, and there were quite a few people even on a holiday. It’s made to order and freshly baked, so you might need to wait when it’s busy.

The flavors are written on this small blackboard. Each order comes with five pieces. I originally only ordered one mixed flavor, but then I saw “Today’s Special: Taro Flavor” written up there. When I see the word “limited,” my willpower weakens—plus I really like taro—so I immediately added an extra order.

The freshly baked egg cake still has a slightly crispy edge.

Ta-da~ This heart shape is kind of girly—I really wanted to make a heart gesture, but there was no one around to take the photo for me. Luckily, I had a guava skewer nearby, so I strung them together. The vendor doesn’t provide bamboo skewers, though!!

Taro Flavor – 5 pcs for $35

Biting into the warm egg cake and finding pieces of taro inside—it’s not a taro paste texture, but the aroma of the taro is quite rich. I really like this flavor. It’s pretty tasty~

Mixed – 5 pcs (2 Vanilla * 1 Plain * 1 Cheese * 2) $35

I only managed to get a photo of the cheese flavor. I also liked this one—the slightly crispy edges of the egg cake with the savory, salty cheese in the middle. So moreish. I forgot to take a picture of the vanilla one, but inside it had vanilla seeds, and the sweet filling paired perfectly with the soft egg cake. It wasn’t overly sweet either.

Plain

There’s no filling inside—just the soft taste of the egg cake itself, with the aroma of baked egg.

I really liked all the flavors I tried that day. Sometimes they have different fillings too, and the heart shape is just so cute. Friends who are interested should definitely try this as an afternoon snack.
