Last updated 2026-09-26 — The Bay Tourism Year kicks off as the Tourism Bureau selects Taiwan’s Top 10 Charming Islands

The Tourism Bureau today announced the launch of the “2018 Bay Tourism Year,” selecting Taiwan’s 10 most charming islands including Guishan Island, Green Island, Orchid Island, Little Liuqiu, Qimei, Yuweng Island (Xi Islet), Jibei, Lesser Kinmen (Lieyu), Beigan, and Dongyin. With the campaign brand “Explore Taiwan’s Islands,” the initiative aims to gradually build an island ecological tourism experience while raising awareness about the sustainable development of marine ecological resources.

Tourism Bureau Director-General Chou Yung-hui stated that Taiwan (including the Penghu Archipelago) has a coastline exceeding 1,500 kilometers. Although its land area accounts for only 0.00025% of the world's total, it is home to over one-tenth of the world’s marine species and boasts a rich diversity of coastal landforms, ecological landscapes, and cultural attractions. This year also sees the hosting of numerous international conferences, events, and bilateral tourism exchanges in Taiwan, including the World’s Most Beautiful Bays Club Annual Conference (Penghu), the Taiwan International Flora Exposition (Taichung), the 9th Asian Bird Fair (Chiayi), as well as bilateral tourism exchange meetings between Taiwan and Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. It is a rare opportunity to expand international engagement, hence the designation of this year as the “Bay Tourism Year.”

To enhance the visibility and international appeal of the bay tourism theme, the Tourism Bureau invited internationally renowned graphic design master and National Award for Arts winner Professor Lin P’an-tsung to personally design the visual logo for Taiwan’s Bay Tourism. Sharing his creative vision, Professor Lin explained that the logo uses the shape of Taiwan as its main motif, incorporating elements such as “islands, seabirds, and bays.” With naturally gradient tones and rhythmic lines, it highlights the diversity and vitality of Taiwan’s bay tourism. The image of a seabird spreading its wings toward the sky symbolizes leading the “2018 Bay Tourism Year” onto the global stage, soaring to let the world see Taiwan.

Beyond just outlying islands, the Tourism Bureau also leverages a “main island x outlying island” tourism model to drive the joint development of both, creating a synergistic effect where 1+1>2. Cross-platform collaborations have been strengthened to enhance environmental preparation, resource inventory, product packaging, tourism safety promotion, and marketing efforts. Over 40 locally distinctive, ocean-related activities across all four seasons have been selected. Through brand building and the integration of local government and industry resources, under themes such as “Seasonal Highlights,” “Exciting Itineraries for Hands-On Experiences,” and “Continuous Promotions for Buzzing Energy,” the initiative aims to continuously attract international visitors to Taiwan and invigorate the domestic tourism market.

The Tourism Bureau stated that more new and preferential information will be successively released on the Facebook fan pages of OhBear (the Tourism Bureau’s mascot), Taiwan Tourism FB Fan Page, and the Taiwan Tourism Information website.
