The inauguration of the National Taichung Theater draws a crowd in aqua blue, becoming a highlight

The National Taichung Theater is Taiwan’s first national performance venue in thirty years,8/26trial operations,9/30and official opening. Designed by Toyo Ito under his unique concept of the “Singing Cavern,” the venue recreates natural habitats with curved walls, flowing water, and cave-like structures amid the city’s concrete buildings, becoming a new landmark for Taichung and transforming the city’s artistic life.

To kick off the inauguration of the National Taichung Theater, special events were held from Friday, August 26 to Sunday, August 28, inviting everyone to the theater,to embody the fluidity of water and experience the flow of sound, light, and air in every corner of the Singing Cavern, savoring the nuanced details throughout the venue. During the event, those dressed in aqua blue tops had the chance to receive a limited-edition Bùlúnhǎi commemorative fan.

The opening ceremony event “Purity. Water” was specially curated by senior theater scholar Qiu Kunliang, using “renewal” as the creative foundation. Drawing from the concept of rivers nurturing civilization, it extracted the ritual framework of temple inauguration ceremonies and collaborated with contemporary outstanding artists to create a ceremonial theater embodying modern artistic aesthetics. The theater plaza was transformed into a visual exhibition/community participation/and a multifunctional stage for ritual altars.

The National Taichung Theater houses three professional theaters and one multifunctional space, the “Corner Salon.” Coupled with the plaza under blue skies and white clouds, the outdoor theater, and the rooftop sky garden, the theater can be described as a stage of charm from the inside out, from the ground to the roof.

The Grand Theater, with its warm red base, elegantly welcomes audiences to share an intimate emotional experience. Located on the second floor of the venue, it has a total of 2,007 seats. Its spatial design mainly focuses on creating a spacious and comfortable environment. To ensure optimal sightlines for the audience, it adopts a 3D surround layout, ensuring excellent viewing angles for every seat. Upon entering, visitors are enveloped in a refined and delightful atmosphere.
