Comparable to the Seto Inland Sea: 2016 North Coast Art Festival

The 2016 North Coast Art Festival officially kicked off on September 1. The artworks span across six major areas of the North Coast, featuring 20 site-specific art installations jointly created by 26 domestic and international artists. In addition, the festival incorporates art-themed mini-trips, captivating performances, workshops, and other activities, transforming the North Coast into an artistic shoreline that connects local cultural heritage, mountain-sea terraced fields, flower seas, and other natural landscapes. Visitors can enjoy gourmet food, watch performances, and engage with art all in one place!

The art festival specially invited Taiwanese artist Lin Shun-Long to be stationed at the Customs Wharf in Tamsui District. Lin has been invited for three consecutive editions to participate in the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale and the Setouchi Triennale in Japan. His works primarily focus on public art, often using the creative process to explore emotional connections between people, the land, and the living environment. His newly created piece for this festival is made from driftwood to form an overturned ancient ship, with the hull transformed into an island.

The 18 selected artists have been stationed in six areas of the North Coast — Tamsui, Bali, Sanzhi, Shimen, Jinshan, and Wanli — each using different materials and themes to develop diverse onsite creations and interactions. The materials range from natural elements such as bamboo, miscanthus, and rice straw to man-made items like PET bottles and fishing nets, bringing a rich variety of expressions to the North Coast Art Festival. These works showcase the diverse aesthetics of the mountains and sea, tell stories of land care and local connections, and reshape new regional values.

In addition to the onsite art installations, the 2016 North Coast Art Festival also organized a series of interactive art workshops, cultural performances, art markets, and North Coast art mini-trips during the exhibition period. These events gather the area’s abundant artistic energy, connecting the emotions between the local environment and its people, and rekindling a sense of belonging to their hometown.
