At 00:28 AM on September 1, 2016, a magnitude 4.8 earthquake was felt. The epicenter was offshore from Yilan, with a depth of 16.7 kilometers. The strongest shaking reached intensity 5 in Su’ao, Yilan.

In addition to intensity 5 in Su’ao, Yilan, other areas that felt the quake included intensity 4 in Heping, Hualien; intensity 3 in Yilan; and intensity 2 in Taipei City, New Taipei, Keelung, Taoyuan, Taichung, and other locations.
