Moderate Typhoon Megi (international name: MEGI): According to the Central Weather Bureau’s forecast at 6:15 AM, the intensity of Typhoon Megi has slightly increased. The typhoon center is located approximately 240 kilometers west of Hualien over the sea. The eye of Typhoon Megi is becoming increasingly distinct, with the radius of the 7-level storm winds at 250 kilometers and that of the 10-level storm winds at 100 kilometers. The storm circle is making landfall and entering the eastern half of Taiwan. Strong gusts of around 10 levels have already appeared along the eastern coastline, and the entire island must remain vigilant against strong winds and heavy rain.

Due to the influence of the typhoon, on September 27, there will be localized extremely heavy rain or super heavy rain in the mountainous areas of Yilan, Hualien, Taitung, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung; localized heavy rain or very heavy rain in the mountainous areas of New Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taichung, Nantou, Chiayi, as well as the plains of Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Yilan, and Hualien; a chance of localized moderate to heavy rain or heavy rain in the mountainous areas of Taipei and Tainan, as well as the plains of New Taipei and Taitung, and the Hengchun Peninsula; there is also a chance of localized heavy rain in the plains of Keelung, Taipei, and from Taoyuan southward to Tainan. Please be alert for landslides, falling rocks, and mudflows. Coastal low-lying areas should be wary of flooding, and avoid activities in mountainous regions and rivers. The main rainfall is expected to become more intense in the afternoon of the 27th.

Strong gusts and long waves are occurring in coastal areas across Taiwan (including Orchid Island, Green Island), Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu. Avoid going to the seaside. As it coincides with spring tide period, coastal low-lying areas should guard against flooding and seawater backflow.

As of 10 AM on September 27, the following areas recorded larger cumulative rainfall: Taipingshan in Yilan County – 519 mm, Jianshi in Hsinchu County – 410 mm, Xiayun in Taoyuan City – 384 mm, Sanxia in New Taipei City – 301 mm, Nanzhuang in Miaoli County – 240 mm, Taoshan in Taichung City – 240 mmmm. Areas with stronger gusts include: Orchid Island and Wuchi – level 13, Hualien and Suao – level 12, Pengjia Islet, Dongjiyu, and Xinyu – level 11, Yilan, Keelung, and Taipei – level 11.

 

 
 
 

Typhoon Megi has wind speeds of 45 meters per second (approximately 162 kilometers per hour), equivalent to a level 14 wind, with instantaneous maximum wind speeds reaching level 16. It is moving northwest at a speed of 23 to 19 kilometers per hour, and is expected to make landfall in the afternoon of the 27th. Whether its path shifts northward in the future is also worth monitoring. Taiwan is expected to gradually exit the storm circle starting the morning of the 28th.
