The world is always full of wonders. Even in today’s digitally advanced era, there are still tranquil havens untouched by the hustle and bustle. Located in the southern part of Italy’s famous Emerald Coast on the southern edge of Europe, a stunning isolated island rises above the azure horizon. This is the world’s smallest kingdom—Tavolara. The island kingdom has only 11 residents and over 100 goats. The current king is Antonio Bertoleoni, and his only privilege is to enjoy free meals at the island’s only restaurant.

In 1807, Giuseppe Bertoleoni, the great-great-grandfather of Antonio, became the first resident of this uninhabited island. In 1836, Carlo Alberto, the ruler of Sardinia, came to Tavolara to hunt goats and was warmly hosted by Giuseppe’s son, Paolo. Delighted, Carlo left and declared the island’s independence, presenting Paolo with a scroll from the House of Savoy, thus establishing the island’s monarchy.
