Frontline Cherry Blossom Forecast: Latest Predictions for Japan’s Cherry Blossom Season

Japan’s cherry blossom season is approaching, and apart from locals, tourists from other countries are also keenly interested in the timing of the blooms. Various weather bureaus have released the latest cherry blossom forecasts. Although the latter half of 2016 saw higher than average temperatures, January 2017 was cooler than usual, so the average temperature is similar to previous years. However, temperatures in the Kanto region were higher, so the cherry blossoms there are expected to bloom earlier than usual. Tokyo is predicted to see the earliest blooms on March 9, while most other regions will bloom around April.

Most areas in the Tohoku region, including much of Hokkaido, are expected to bloom in May. As May coincides with Japan’s Golden Week, a large number of tourists are expected to visit for cherry blossom viewing. Additionally, please note that the current predictions indicate blooming dates, but the best time for viewing — the full bloom period — is typically 5 to 10 days after blooming. Travelers are advised to plan their cherry blossom trips early and keep an eye on the weather bureau’s updated forecasts.
