Travel accommodation budgets to rise as global travelers face increased lodging taxes in Japan

Travelers planning a trip to Osaka should take note: The Osaka city government in Japan has announced that starting July 1, the accommodation tax will be extended to include short-term rentals such as Airbnb. Guests staying at these accommodations will be required to pay the tax if the cost per person per night exceeds ¥10,000; the amount varies in three tiers from ¥100 to ¥300 depending on the total, and is collected by the accommodation provider before being remitted to the government.

According to regulations set by the Osaka government, the accommodation tax is ¥100 for stays costing between ¥10,000 and ¥15,000 per person per night; ¥200 for stays between ¥15,000 and ¥20,000; and ¥300 for stays over ¥20,000. The tax is calculated on a “per person, per day” basis. Osaka is the second city in Japan to implement such a tax, following Tokyo.
