The trend of shopping for Japanese home appliances continues to surge, with beauty appliances particularly standing out as a favorite among women. These have become a must-buy category for travelers visiting Japan—either bringing them back themselves, asking friends to purchase them, or resorting to shopping agents if they can’t obtain them directly. In recent years, the iconic hair dryers that never seem to lose their popularity have gone through several generations, yet continue to be warmly embraced by female consumers. They have also gradually formed two distinct fan groups: one that favors Panasonic, which emphasizes negative ions—launching in 2016 the Platinum Nano Hydro Ion model NA98 (EH-NA98) that claims to care for your hair and skin while styling, and another that supports TESCOM, a brand beloved by Japanese salons. TESCOM not only offers negative ions but also features an ingenious collagen cartridge in its TCD4000 model, promising to blow collagen-infused air onto your hair.Aside from these unique features, both brands’ hair dryers boast strong airflow (for quick drying), multiple heat and cool settings, and intelligent temperature control. When the Japanese yen is weaker, it becomes an excellent opportunity for many female shoppers to make a purchase.

Panasonic’s Latest Hair Dryer NA98 vs TESCOM’s Best-Selling Long-Hit Model TCD4000

Notably, Panasonic’s latest hair dryer NA98 became available in Taiwan starting January 2017, priced at NT$6,290. Thanks to a strong advertising campaign featuring endorser Kiko Mizuhara, women’s awareness when choosing a hair dryer has greatly evolved beyond just “drying convenience.” Now, multi-functional benefits are key considerations, and the desire to enhance beauty through such small appliances has grown even stronger. Meanwhile, TESCOM’s TCD4000, which debuted in 2013 with its promise to blow collagen, has remained consistently popular. In September 2016, it launched the TCD5000TW as a Taiwan-exclusive model, marketed as “Made in Japan” (note: it’s not available in Japan either—don’t ask shopping agents to get this one for you), priced at NT$4,490. It introduced platinum collagen functionality for the first time, offering skincare while drying your hair, further intensifying the battle between “Platinum Nano Hydro Ion” and “Platinum Collagen.”

The TESCOM Hair Dryer TCD5000TW—Available Only in Taiwan

As new models of hair dryers are released at a fairly rapid pace, those seeking the ultimate hair dryer may consider purchasing during periods of favorable exchange rates, either on their trip to Japan or through a shopping agent. But it’s also worth looking into some older models that were once top-rated—there can be significant price differences, allowing you to compare based on your needs and budget.
