A century-old train station transforms into a Starry Sky Plaza, offering vibrant day-and-night scenes and a must-visit photo spot

After the new Pingtung Railway Station was put into use, the original site of the old station was demolished, freeing up a large public space. The Pingtung County Government is now working hard to create a new landmark for Pingtung on the east side of the entrance. With the recent completion of the project’s initial form, it has sparked considerable curiosity among passersby. The landscape plaza, representing a new face and atmosphere for Pingtung, was designed by a renowned domestic architect. It draws inspiration mainly from the Da-Wu Mountain Range, which symbolizes the continuous mountain range extending across Pingtung, standing as a geographical barrier that has long protected the Pingtung Plain from typhoons—like a mother nurturing her home. Hence, it is affectionately called the “Mother of the Earth.”

The architect skillfully transformed the natural landscape of Da-Wu Mountain and the imagery of the local guardian deity by using a hollow steel frame to depict the shape of the mountain. The pavement features flowing contour lines, with sections covered in grass, planted with native tree species, and equipped with a misting system to convey the ambiance of the mountains, adding richness and fun. At night, a starry sky lighting scene is also designed, allowing visitors to enjoy different views whether they come during the day or at night. There is much anticipation for the new look of Pingtung to be unveiled soon.

The construction of Starry Sky Da-Wu Mountain Plaza is currently about 60% complete and is scheduled to be finished by the end of August, with an official launch in November. A inauguration concert will be held at that time, and visitors are welcome to attend with their families. Once completed, the plaza area in front of the station will become an important transportation hub and urban streetscape landmark. Together with the Pingtung Transfer Station and Pingtung Night Market on the west side, it will attract tourist crowds and showcase a new image for Pingtung.
