40th Anniversary of Shoushan Zoo: Old Photos Sought for Nostalgic Exhibition

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Shoushan Zoo, and the Kaohsiung City Tourism Bureau has proposed a new comprehensive upgrade plan focusing on three main axes: conservation, education, and recreation. Key animal enclosures will be renovated, potential new species are under evaluation, an old photo exhibition is planned, and a brand-new “human-animal interaction zone” is in the works. Additionally, the Neimen Leisure Park project is set to break ground this year, and the public can look forward to its development.

Currently, Shoushan Zoo is home to 75 species and over 800 animals. Tourism Bureau Director Tseng Tzu-wen mentioned that besides Taiwan’s iconic standing black bear “Bobby” and the glass-cleaning orangutan “Mimi,” the African female elephant “Ali,” who has recently drawn attention, is also among the popular stars.

She noted that Shoushan Zoo has a rich history and this year celebrates its 40th anniversary. A comprehensive planning proposal will be introduced, integrating education, conservation, and recreation. The park’s visitor routes are being reviewed for adjustments, and certain exhibits such as the white rhino area will undergo renovation to improve living conditions. The hope is also to welcome new animals.

She said that this year, efforts will be made to collect old photos for a nostalgic exhibition, and the public is encouraged to contribute. Aside from the current zoo tram service, there is also an interactive feeding area for alpacas. Plans are underway to develop a brand-new interaction zone to allow visitors to get even closer to the animals.

Regarding the much-anticipated Neimen Tourism and Leisure Park, Tseng Tzu-wen stated that the project is currently under review by the Construction and Planning Agency. The review panel has completed revisions based on feedback and will resubmit it for further approval. It is expected to pass initial review early this year, and if all goes smoothly, construction could begin this year. Preliminary plans include bird enclosures, ecological ponds, and fitness facilities.

Additionally, the “2018 Shoushan: A Colorful Year” campaign introduces a stamp-collecting booklet featuring 12 monthly animal stars. Through fun and educational activities, it aims to enhance awareness of wildlife among both children and adults. On the 14th, the January Peacock Activity Day was held, inviting visitors to observe peacock feathers and create postcards using paintbrushes. The public is welcome to join the events, and those who collect three or more stamps will receive gifts from the ShouQ family.
