If you want to see the famous “king lotus,” known for its massive leaves that can support a person’s weight, besides Hsinchuang’s Guanyin or Tainan’s Baihe, there’s now a new option. Taipei’s Shuangxi Park has resumed cultivating king lotus. Once you step into Shuangxi Park, you’ll see king lotus pads covering the pond’s surface, and with just a simple registration, you can experience the joy of sitting atop one.

Native to tropical regions of South America, the king lotus was introduced to Taiwan and has mainly been cultivated in Tainan’s Baihe District and Taoyuan’s Guanyin District. In 2013, it was first successfully grown and displayed at Shuangxi Park, and in 2014, a riding event was held. The event received an enthusiastic response and was very popular among residents, but it was not continued afterward due to water shortages across Taiwan. This year, to make it easier for people to view and experience the fun of “light-footed water-walking,” king lotus has been specially replanted at the classic, old-world Shuangxi Park.

The “2017 King Lotus Fantasy Float” is scheduled to open at Shuangxi Park on August 16. By then, the lotus leaves are sure to be even more spectacular. The event will run for two to three weeks, with several floating experiences scheduled each day. On average, each session can accommodate 40 to 50 participants. This year, the lotus pads are expected to support weights up to 60 kilograms, allowing even more visitors to try out the water-floating experience.
