From Xishu to Good Fortune: A Stroll Through Tainan’s Colorful Cultural and Creative Community

Xishu is located in the coastal area on the outskirts of Tainan’s urban center, characterized by traditional historic settlements and folk culture. It neighbors the Golden Coast, famous for its stunning sunsets, as well as the Wanli commercial district. It is part of Tainan’s early old-style coastal small village settlements. In recent years, the Xishu community has launched a local small market—Xishi Market—promoting leisure sports and street performer markets based on the seaside environment. It gathers artistic talents to create a new seaside settlement culture, thereby helping more people learn about this simple little fishing village.
 

It is said that the adorable name “Xishu” (which can be literally translated as “lucky tree”) came about because during local festivals or celebratory events, the community often used |kengdu (a type of palm frond, also known as xianpiqi), symbolizing good fortune and happiness. There are also many kengdu trees in the area, which is why it is also nicknamed the “kengdu village.”
 

Originally an old settlement with a history of about 300 years, it had gradually been forgotten on the edge of the city. Though the settlement declined, cats still jumped across rooftops from one household to another—and this became the inspiration for the creative concept.

One of the most distinctive cultural and creative products in the Xishu community is the grandma-made little fish buns, so realistic they make you feel like you're picking fresh seafood at a fish market. There are all kinds of fish designs, making these unique items found only here.
 

This weekend, come to Xishu to enjoy the breeze and the sea, then step into the community to “explore art, see cultural creations, and taste local farm-fresh food,” immersing yourself in the new Kunxi Bay seaside settlement culture.
