It's been two years, and we're finally back！ The Wulai Train has reopened.

The Wulai Old Street in New Taipei City was severely damaged by Typhoon Soudelor two years ago. The mountainous area experienced torrential rains unseen in decades, causing multiple landslides and cutting off the railway trackbed of the Wulai Train. Although foot traffic in Wulai Old Street has recovered to about 80%, the waterfall area lacks the Wulai Train connection, resulting in visitor numbers being less than half of pre-disaster levels. The Forestry Bureau’s Hsinchu Forest District Office is currently carrying out renovation, restoration, and testing operations, with plans to resume service after testing is completed at the end of August.

The Wulai Train line was originally used to transport logging equipment and harvested timber. In 1951, with the opening of the road to Wulai, tourists began to visit. At that time, only the train track connected the Wulai district to the waterfall, so a hand-pushed passenger train was introduced to carry visitors to the waterfall area. Though the hand-pushed carts are no longer in use, riding on the only remaining train tracks in Taiwan still offers a strong sense of retro charm.

The Wulai Train cars have been repainted, featuring local tree frogs, wild boars, and indigenous patterns for a renewed look. Drivers have also been trained to familiarize themselves with the train’s history and share stories with passengers as they drive. Seasonal thematic tours have been developed in collaboration with local businesses, including the Shuizhen Trail, Atayal Museum, Forestry Life Museum, and the Bronze Sculpture Art Studio. The goal is to revive the former glory of Wulai tourism after the train resumes operation.
