Typhoon Lan, the 21st typhoon, intensifies to a moderate typhoon—travelers to Japan should stay alert

The central pressure of Typhoon Lan is 970 hPa, with maximum sustained winds of 33 meters per second near the center and gusts reaching up to 43 meters per second. The radius of the typhoon-force winds (7th level) is 180 kilometers, and that of the severe typhoon-force winds (10th level) is 50 kilometers. Typhoon Lan has been rapidly intensifying and is predicted to be the strongest of the year so far, with potential to develop into a powerful typhoon heading straight for Japan.

Affected by the northeastern monsoon, a heavy rain advisory has been issued for northern and northeastern Taiwan. There will be rain in Keelung and the northern coast, scattered brief showers in northern and northeastern Taiwan, isolated brief showers in eastern and southeastern regions, while other areas including Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu will have mostly cloudy to sunny weather, with isolated brief thunderstorms possible in mountainous areas of central and southern Taiwan in the afternoon. Strong winds are expected over the eastern sea and land areas, which requires extra caution.
