Train enthusiasts get another Instagrammable spot — Japan’s first MUJI-designed train station

The minimalist style of MUJI is loved by travelers worldwide. After venturing into the hotel and fresh produce market industries, the brand is now setting its sights on train stations. Keihan Electric Railway has announced that Keihan Mihama Station will undergo renovations, with the new station to be designed by MUJI. It is expected to officially open by the end of 2018 and will become Japan’s first “MUJI station.”

Keihan Holdings has announced that Mihama Station in Osaka Prefecture, operated by Keihan Electric Railway, will be redesigned by Ryohin Keikaku, the operator of MUJI, and will make its debut with a fresh new look. The goal is to create a station that people actually want to visit. A large MUJI store will also open on the second floor of the adjacent Keihan Department Store, which connects to the station.

This marks Ryohin Keikaku’s first involvement in station interior design. The floor inside and outside the ticket gates on the second floor will feature a wood grain texture, and shops offering fresh food, side dishes, and dining options will also be built inside the ticket gate area. The renovation is expected to be completed by the end of 2018. The MUJI store inside the Keihan Department Store is slated to open in May 2018.
