A newly unveiled hidden gem in Hualien after 20 years, plus three must-visit tourist attractions you can't miss

Hualien besides its long coastline, also conceals many amazing hidden spots in its valleys and tribal areas. At the foot of Mount Masi in Guangfu Township lies an undeveloped hidden gem called "Jilitan," which has remained untouched for 20 years. Back then, tribal residents applied to dredge and excavate a "log storage pond," but after the decline of the logging industry, weeds took over. Recently, through the efforts of local advocates, the township office has applied to include it under the Eastern Taiwan Development Act, and it will be developed into a new tourist attraction.

After renovation by the township office and the Soil and Water Conservation Bureau of the Council of Agriculture, the area now features well-manicured lawns and stacked stone wells. Scenic spots such as the Moon-Reflecting Arch Bridge and Penglai Immortal Island have shed their former mystery and become a new recreational spot in Hualien, also earning the title of the fifth pearl at the foot of Mount Masi. The five pearls of Guangfu Township are North Jilitan, South Forest Park, East Lasoey, West Matianyan, and Central Sugar Factory. Below are introductions to Matianyan Wetland, Guangfu Sugar Factory, and Lasoey Spring.

1. Matianyan Wetland
The renowned Matianyan Wetland in the valley region is located at the foot of Mount Masi. It is a natural swamp wetland with ceaseless spring water, fed by underground springs and shaped by the varying depths of streams, nurturing the rich life of this swamp. In summer, blooming lotuses can be seen, making it a great spot for family outings and walks.

2. Guangfu Sugar Factory
Hualien’s former sugar factory, once an important sugar production facility in eastern Taiwan, was transformed into a tourist sugar factory after operations ceased. In recent years, it has actively developed its tourism features, combining guided tours, Japanese-style wooden houses, specialty meals, sugar factory ice cream, Taiwan Sugar agricultural specialties, and local merchandise to offer visitors a rich experience of lodging, dining, sightseeing, and entertainment.
