Visiting South Korea’s World Heritage Site “Suwon Hwaseong Fortress” for the first time, I joined Korean aunties and uncles on the train. Riding upward through the autumn breeze, we admired the towering fortress walls and imagined the grandeur of ancient times — truly a delightful experience, though sadly all too brief.

After several days of dramatic scenery during my Seoul trip, I took a ride to Suwon City in Gyeonggi Province, just outside Seoul, to visit the World Heritage Site “Suwon Hwaseong Fortress.” Under the bright sunlight, the dusty gray walls stood majestically high, giving off an air of untouchable dignity.

  1. A loop around Suwon Hwaseong Fortress reveals a streetscape where old and new coexist.
  2. The train’s exterior design is inspired by the palanquins used by kings during the Joseon Dynasty.
  3. Near the Hwaseong Train ticket counter, there is a spacious archery field available for paid experiences.
  4. I happened to encounter a group of Korean students on a school outing.
  5. Korean elders walked uphill along the archery field to build their stamina.
