Ueno Zoo’s panda cub sparks craze; seven must-buy adorable merchandise items

The panda cub Xiang Xiang, born at Ueno Zoo this June, is not only the first panda born at the zoo in 29 years but also the latest animal star capturing nationwide attention in Japan. To celebrate, Ueno Zoo has specially arranged a public debut via an online reservation lottery system. Numerous shops and restaurants in the Ueno area have also launched a variety of panda-themed merchandise and limited-edition meals, filling the surroundings with a strong “panda atmosphere” to commemorate the birth of cub Xiang Xiang.

1. YOKU MOKU launches “Panda Mini Cigar Puff Pastries”

Established in 1969, the renowned Tokyo brand YOKU MOKU is famous for its cigar puffs, which are not only one of the must-buy souvenirs for visitors to Japan but also highly popular among locals for their classic original flavor. To commemorate the birth of panda cub Xiang Xiang, the brand has specially introduced “Panda Mini Cigar Puff Pastries,” featuring adorable panda parent-and-cub designs and available exclusively at Matsuzakaya Ueno, ecute Ueno, and Tokyo Station Ichibangai Shop.

2. Sugar Butter Tree releases “Panda Sugar Butter Sandwich Cookies” and “Panda Station Master Gift Box”

Globally loved for its sugar butter sandwich cookies, Sugar Butter Tree has also launched two panda-themed products to celebrate the cub’s arrival: “Panda Sugar Butter Sandwich Cookies” and “Panda Station Master Gift Box.” These treats not only feature cute designs but also showcase panda patterns on the classic cookie layers, making them hard to resist eating.

3. Ginza Cozy Corner’s Ueno Park L’UENO Store offers “Panda Mochi”

These “Panda Mochi” can only be purchased at the Ueno L’UENO store and are entirely baked on-site, ensuring the freshest, hot-off-the-oven taste. In addition to the classic flavors — custard, chocolate, red bean, and cheese — a limited-edition chestnut flavor is now available for autumn and winter.
