Anti-counterfeiting features upgraded again as second-generation chip passports are launched; netizens rush to replace theirs

Since Taiwan began issuing chip-embedded passports in 2008, it has not only successfully secured visa-free, visa-on-arrival, or other visa facilitation treatment for Taiwanese passport holders from 166 countries and regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the European Union, but has also received recognition from countries and the world. This time, to keep up with the rapid development of global document anti-counterfeiting technology, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it will soon issue the second-generation chip passport (e-Passport), which not only keeps up with global trends but also effectively prevents passport-related crimes and other illegal activities, upgrading both public security and diplomatic standards.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out that the second-generation chip passport not only adopts internationally advanced passport anti-counterfeiting technologies — such as adding a third image of the passport holder and using a “metalized surface embossing” design for the security laminate — to further enhance its anti-counterfeiting capabilities. In addition, the second-generation chip passport has completely renewed the designs on its inner pages, featuring themes such as iconic landmarks and local customs from various cities and counties across Taiwan. This not only showcases Taiwan’s diverse character but also adds a distinct “Taiwanese flavor” to the passport.

The fees for the second-generation chip passport remain unchanged, and the application requirements and procedures are the same as before. Currently held passports can still be used until their expiration dates, and people can also choose to apply for the second-generation chip passport early. The flexible options not only make things more convenient for everyone but also provide greater safety when traveling abroad.
