Turns out New Year's Eve in Thailand is this much fun — five must-do and must-see highlights

For New Year's 2018, besides celebrating in Taiwan, traveling abroad is also a great option. Thailand is holding spectacular countdown celebrations in five regions to welcome 2018, namely in Lampang, Sakon Nakhon, Rayong, Phuket, and Kanchanaburi. All will host grand festivities, offering travelers an unforgettable New Year’s Eve.

Lampang
In the north, the “Amazing Thailand 2018 Countdown Event” will be held in Lampang, where the famous horse carriages will be adorned with bright and beautiful lights.

Sakon Nakhon
In the northeast or Isan region, the celebration takes place in the Ming Men area of Sakon Nakhon. Themed “Cool Isan,” it emphasizes street performances, local cuisine, and products — including three types of locally raised, charming black animals under a royal project initiative: chickens, pigs, and yellow cattle.

Rayong
On the eastern coast, Rayong will feature the popular seaside town of Ban Phe, where fishing boats will be decorated with lights. The celebration will take place in a cozy seaside atmosphere, featuring 90s and EDM live music performances, local dishes from community chefs, DIY workshops, and environmental cleanup activities.

Phuket
In the south, Phuket’s historic Old Town will come alive with elaborately decorated Sino-Portuguese buildings, along with a variety of festive activities including traditional Peranakan cultural performances and parades, carnivals, concerts, and vintage market exhibitions. The “Amazing Thailand 2018 Countdown Event” celebration will be held at the Observation Tower and Standard Chartered Building. An environmental cleanup activity will take place on January 1, 2018.

Kanchanaburi
In the west, the Thai Tourism Authority is holding the “Amazing Thailand 2018 Countdown Event” at the historic “Bridge on the River Kwai” in Kanchanaburi. One of the highlights is a special train crossing the iconic bridge right after the New Year’s bell rings.

The “Amazing Thailand 2018 Countdown Event” will run from 4:00 PM to 12:00 AM on December 30–31, 2017. In Lampang, the event will begin as early as December 22, 2017.
