Riding the wave of Japan’s wagyu beef import liberalization, Japan’s No. 1 udon chain “Marugame Seimen” is launching again, offering a limited quantity of its 2018 New Year’s special “Wagyu Udon” for just three days from December 30 to January 1. On New Year’s Day, it will be upgraded at no additional cost to A5-grade “Kobe Beef,” one of Japan’s top three wagyu types, priced at NT$370 for a single serving. The “Wagyu Iriko Udon Set,” which includes wasabi-pickled potherb mustard, mashed yam, and a mix of tempura (squid and shrimp), is even more of a bargain at just NT$430.

Marugame Seimen boasts an impressive track record of opening 77 stores across Taiwan in recent years. Starting January 2018, the menu will also undergo its first major update: popular items that stay true to authentic Japanese flavors, such as “Kama-age Udon” and “Nikudama Tsuyu Udon” known for their chewy texture, will remain, while also incorporating feedback from local diners. New Taiwan-exclusive offerings like “Tomato Chicken Udon,” “Seasonal Vegetable Pork Udon,” and “Thai-style Pork Udon” aim to help the brand take deeper root in Taiwan and become the go-to choice for udon lovers.
A5-grade Kobe Beef Udon paired with mashed yam offers an exquisite taste.
The “Wagyu Udon” features A5-grade Black Wagyu directly from the brand’s own farm in Hyogo Prefecture, with fine and beautiful marbling, sweet umami flavors, and a melt-in-your-mouth texture that lingers. Paired with freshly hand-made udon noodles from the store, using the golden ratio of wheat flour, water, and salt to create a springy texture, along with golden dashi broth simmered from katsuobushi, it pushes the boundaries of udon deliciousness. The set is complemented by smooth mashed yam to cut through the richness, plus wasabi-pickled potherb mustard and a mix of tempura (squid and shrimp) for the perfect finishing touch.

Marugame Seimen recommends pairing the dish with refreshing plum juice or green tea. After collaborating with Chun Shui Tang, the first branch in Taipei’s Xinyi District introduced a rich and aromatic brown sugar milk tea. Adding traditional Chinese medicinal herbs and premium bird’s nest, it highlights the mellow and rich flavor of the tea base. Finally, they also added modern fruity options like lemon and yuzu to cater to diverse palates.
Delicious Wagyu udon is only available for a limited time over these three days.
In addition, Marugame Seimen is celebrating the New Year by running a special promotion from January 1 (Mon) to January 3 (Wed): upgrade your medium bowl to a large bowl for just NT$1 (excluding Wagyu Udon). This allows udon fans to enjoy a hearty meal for just NT$1 in the new year.
The “Wagyu Udon” is available in limited quantities simultaneously at 27 nationwide outlets from December 30, 2017, to January 1, 2018. The single serving is priced at NT$370, and the set (with wasabi-pickled potherb mustard, mashed yam, and mixed tempura) is only NT$430. Each store has a daily limit of 10 servings (some locations may increase availability based on demand), available while supplies last. On New Year’s Day (January 1), it will be automatically upgraded to the luxurious “Kobe Beef”—perfect for those eager to try one of Japan’s top three wagyu varieties. Don’t miss this chance.
