A trendy little brunch spot in Taichung that’s super Insta-worthy, featuring a photogenic pair of angel wings

This “Food Lab” is probably the closest brunch place to my home. But since they don’t take phone reservations and parking nearby is a nightmare, I’ve tried coming here several times but never managed to get a meal.

That morning, I had a cold and needed to see a doctor. To avoid wasting time looking for parking, I hopped on Kevin’s scooter. Truth be told, it had been over three years since I last rode one—I was a bit rusty myself, but the pedestrians should’ve been more worried... XD Anyway... On the way back, I thought I’d give “Food Lab” another shot, and this time, I finally got to eat there.

“Food Lab” is located at the south gate of Songzhu Elementary School in Beitun. See those angel wings at the entrance? Many people actually come here just to take photos with them.

I think this little potted plant at the entrance is adorable—it’s Totoro. I ended up squatting here and taking photos for ages... (My legs got so sore!)

The dining space inside isn’t very big—there are only about six tables. Since I arrived early that day, I didn’t have to wait for a seat. But by the time I finished eating and was leaving, there was already a crowd waiting outside. Hahaha—just as they say, the early bird gets the worm.

DIY tap water.

If you order a burger, disposable gloves are placed on the counter—you can grab them yourself.

Although the space is small, they’ve put a lot of thought into every detail, giving off a vibe of being small but beautiful and clever. The decor has an industrial touch, and the overall atmosphere feels quite design-oriented.

Menu.

Basic Latte – NT$110(No, I didn’t make a typo—that’s really what it says on the menu. Isn’t it adorable?) The latte art on this coffee is gorgeous. It’s medium-dark roast, with fine milk foam and the perfect temperature—smooth and delicious.

Chef’s Secret Roast Chicken Burger – NT$170When this burger was served, just looking at the side profile, it totally looked like a landslide about to happen. So epic.

The egg was super silky, the chicken thigh was marinated and tender with great flavor, and there was even peanut butter. The whole combination tasted amazing. The bread was also well-chosen—not dry or tough at all. The sauce was pretty bold, but paired with the lettuce, it added a refreshing crunch.

The fries were thick-cut, but the burger portion was so huge I couldn’t finish the fries. “Food Lab” is one of the few high-quality brunch spots in the Beitun area. Though the space is small, the decor and ingredients are thoughtfully done—no wonder it’s always so busy.
