A nationwide search for retro, dreamy, and mysterious mazes — they’re scenic spots and popular photo ops

Mazes have a certain magic that makes you want to dive in but also hate to leave. In the past, mazes were created with shrubbery to form dazzling patterns, but nowadays, they’re made with wine jars, flagstones, and other materials in various designs. Some farms even use rice or corn to create limited-edition mazes. Even if you might find the exit quickly, these mind-bending looks are sure to make you pull out your camera and snap away non-stop.

1. Taipei Expo Park – Hsinchuang Area

Don’t assume that after the Taipei Expo ended, all that’s left is a vast and dull park. Taipei Expo Park is not only large but also home to many beautiful flowers, such as primroses and white daisies. Most importantly, there’s a maze garden designed with hedges and shrubs in a geometric style. Many parents bring their kids here for a fun adventure, and it’s also a must-shoot maze for many Instagram influencers on sunny days.

2. Fugui Cape Park – Laomei Maze

Many people who visit Laomei only know about the vast green “seascape carpet” — the Laomei Rock Pools. But actually, right next door at Fugui Cape Park, there’s a nostalgic red-brick wall maze. Viewed from above, it somewhat resembles a bagua (eight trigrams) symbol. Wandering through it feels like going back to your childhood, playing hide-and-seek with friends at your grandparents’ red-brick house. This time, why not race your friends to see who can find the exit first?

3. 49 Maze Garden (Pengfu Elementary School)

Although it’s called the “49” maze, there are far more than 49 wine jars here. It was created to commemorate the relocation of the Shulin Distillery to Linkou. The distillery provided hundreds of wine jars to form this maze garden. Since the jars came from Shulin Distillery — referred to as “Shu Jiu” (樹酒), which sounds like “49” (四九) — the maze got its name. However, this maze is located inside Pengfu Elementary School, so it’s only accessible on holidays. Go check it out during your break, Up！

4. Hui Feng Horticulture Bougainvillea Maze

Bougainvillea, commonly seen in gardens and parks, adds splashes of purple-red beauty to green spaces when in bloom. But when hundreds of bougainvillea plants flower together, it’s a whole other level of beauty. At Hui Feng Horticulture in Tianwei, Changhua, which specializes in potted bougainvillea, the area has no seating or food stalls — it’s just meant for you to take as many photos as you want of the vibrant floral sea. With shades of pink, purple, and white intertwined, it's like stepping into a bougainvillea maze.

5. Discovery · Maze European-style Manor

If no one told you this was in Taiwan, you’d think you’d stepped into the “Secret Garden” by British author Frances Hodgson Burnett. Walk past the domed, carved white pavilion and you’ll find a jungle maze. Next to it, a high wall covered in greenery features a heart shape, making it a favorite spot for couples to snap loving photos in addition to playing “you chase me” games in the maze.

6. National Museum of Prehistory

A must-shoot popular spot at the prehistoric culture museum — the “miniature moving maze” on the plaza, made of stacked stones. Though small, its height is just right to let you weave through and search for the exit. Also, every evening, the museum’s water dance area puts on a performance with flowing lights, adding a romantic atmosphere.
