No drafts, no discussions   Artists unleash "pristine landscapes" in hotel murals

A new "art hotel" is set to open in Taoyuan's Nanhua District on July 5. To align with the hotel’s ethos, two freelance painters were invited to create murals in just two weeks using an improvised, "no-drafts" approach, capturing Taiwan’s cultural and natural essence.

The Fullerton International Hotel is a brand-new ten-story-above-ground, two-story-below-ground property. To establish a "distinctive, unique, and vibrant" style, the hotel invited artists Lü Muyi and Jiao Shengwei from the Eye Worm Project to paint a mural above the reception desk. Titled "Pristine Landscapes," the artwork highlights Taiwan’s unique scenery and uses bright colors and simple, expressive lines to convey care for the nation’s culture and natural ecology.

Zeng Meizhu, deputy general manager of the hotel, said the goal was to create a "wow effect" for guests upon arrival. The mural above the reception desk was painted by the two artists, who notably worked without any sketches or discussions. The resulting patterns grew freely like eye worms—some overlapping, others fading away. With their vivid colors and rich imagery, the murals make guests feel as though they’ve stepped into an art gallery, leaving a strong positive impression right away.

Both painters share a deep love for Taiwan, allowing them to explore themes freely without restrictions. The result is a 21-meter-long "Pristine Landscapes" mural that features iconic Taiwanese animals such as the Formosan black bear, Formosan macaque, Formosan dog, and sika deer, among others. It also includes visual representations of ecological cycles and environmental protection, along with abstract expressions ranging from "love for family" to "love for the land." This mural has become a signature feature of the hotel.
