JapanThroughout the year, there are different flowers to admire. After the cherry blossom season comes the rainy season, which also means that hydrangeas will soon be in full bloom. Compared to the usual need to go deep into the mountains for flower viewing,Tokyo’s nearby suburb,Kamakurain Kanagawa Prefecture, is much more accessible. Along the Enoden railway line, you can see temples covered in hydrangeas in varying shades of blue, bringing a vibrant liveliness to the usually solemn and quiet temples!

1. Meigetsu-in

Among the temples inKamakura, Meigetsu-in is one of the earliest places where you can enjoy flowers and is also known as the "Hydrangea Temple." With 2,500 ancient varieties ofJapanesehydrangeas, known as "Ajisai," planted in the temple grounds, the flowers display a rich palette of colors—blue, purple, light blue, and even green. However, the most captivating sight is the hydrangea-covered stone steps, which create a uniquely dreamy atmosphere. When the sunlight filters through, it presents an ever-changing hue. 2. Jōchō-in

The ocean view combined with the hydrangea staircase makes Jōchō-in a pilgrimage site for tourists from around the world every flowering season. Climbing the 108 steps of the Tōgemon along the stone path leads to the temple, where you can enjoy the spectacular view of hydrangeas alongside the Shōnan coastline. Compared to Meigetsu-in, which mainly features a sea of blue flowers, this temple showcases a wider variety of colors such as purple, white, magenta, and pink. That’s why, despite its smaller size, it’s always packed with visitors.

3. Hase-dera

Among the three temples, Hase-dera is the most popular. Visiting from mid-June onwards, especially right after the rain, offers particularly splendid hydrangea blooms. A small path behind the Kannon Hall is lined with 2,500 hydrangea plants, and walking along it leads to an observation deck near the main hall where you can take in theKamakuraseascape. To avoid the crowds, try to visit on a weekday before noon.

However, the hydrangea blooming period is quite short, lasting only until early July, with the earliest blooms appearing in early June. If you plan to go, make sure to time it right!
