Seven live tigers appear in Pingtung — Tourism Bureau: Catch five and win a five-star hotel stay

The Tourism and Communication Bureau’s “The Fantastic Journey to Find Richard Parker” event hides seven tigers made of different materials around Pingtung, inviting participants to find them, take photos, and upload them for a chance to win big prizes. The event has been popular among tourists. The Bureau Chief Yin Fenglan said that the second phase of the activity runs until August 30, during peak summer travel season, and visitors to Hengchun shouldn’t miss out on the fun of searching for the tigers.

Continuing the storyline of director Ang Lee’s film “Life of Pi,” the Tourism and Communication Bureau launched the “The Fantastic Journey to Find Richard Parker” event, placing seven tigers made of various materials at locations such as Baisha Bay in Kenting, Hengchun Bus Transfer Station, Folklore Museum, the Floating City Wall at Hengchun Junior High School, Qianggu Shed, Nanwan, and the Iron Horse Station at the Kenting Police Station. As long as visitors find five or seven tigers, take group photos with them, and use a smartphone app to collage the images into one photo, they can then upload the collage to the event website. Once a serial number is successfully obtained, participants will not only receive a souvenir but also be entered into a draw for cash prizes, accommodation vouchers, and other great rewards.

The Tourism and Communication Bureau explained that the event began on April 20. The first phase, titled “Catch Five Tigers for a Five-Star Hotel Stay,” originally allowed participants who successfully uploaded five photos with tigers to enter a draw for prizes such as five-star hotel vouchers, specialty homestay vouchers, and Pingtung’s signature pineapple cakes. However, most participants managed to find all seven tigers, generating an overwhelmingly positive response — especially since the tiger in Nanwan, known for its lifelike design, proved the most popular among visitors.

Many participants left comments on their photos, calling the event fun and exciting, almost like a treasure hunt. Some found all seven tigers in just three hours, others took three days to complete the set, some stumbled upon the tigers while on their honeymoon, while others used the activity to discover new spots on the Hengchun Peninsula or revisit old favorites. Some children expressed gratitude for the event, which encouraged their parents to take them to Kenting. There were even those who brought along their own collection of little tiger toys to pose with the hidden tigers — super cute.

According to the Tourism and Communication Bureau, by the end of the first phase on June 30, 407 people had successfully uploaded their photos. A computer draw selected 10 winners of five-star hotel vouchers, 10 winners of specialty homestay vouchers, and 30 winners of Pingtung’s signature pineapple cakes. The list of winning serial numbers has been published on the bureau’s official website, the “I Pingtung ~ Love Pingtung” Facebook fan page, and the event website. Prizes will be mailed to the winners soon.

The “The Fantastic Journey to Find Richard Parker” event has now entered its second phase, “Catch Seven Tigers for a Chance at NT$70,000 in Cash.” Participants who manage to gather and upload seven photos with tigers by August 30 will be eligible to win cash prizes of NT$20,000 and NT$10,000, specialty homestay vouchers, round-trip Taiwan High-Speed Rail tickets, and Pingtung’s signature pineapple cakes. Those who successfully found all seven tigers in the first phase but didn’t win a prize can still join the second phase draw.
