Egypt’s travel alert level raised to “red”   Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Not advisable to travel there recently

The Egyptian military launched a coup on July 3, ousting President Morsi, leading to political chaos. Major cities across Egypt may continue to experience unrest in the near future. Starting today (4th), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has upgraded Egypt’s travel alert level from orange to “red,” advising nationals against traveling to Egypt for business or tourism in the near term. Travelers who have already booked related trips may contact their travel agencies for assistance.

The Egyptian military launched a coup on July 3, causing political upheaval. Currently, many domestic students are using their summer break to volunteer overseas in Egypt. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges nationals who are already in Egypt for travel or volunteering to maintain close contact with the Taiwanese Representative Office in Jordan, the Taiwan Trade Center in Cairo under the Taiwan External Trade Development Council, and their families back home, or to plan an early return.

The Tourism Bureau stated that there are currently about seven tour groups totaling 186 people in Egypt. Around 37 groups, consisting of approximately 800 people, had originally planned to visit Egypt before the end of September. Aside from canceling their bookings, travelers who wish to postpone their trips or join different groups may contact their travel agencies for arrangements. Nationals in Egypt facing emergencies can contact the Director of the Taiwan Trade Center in Cairo, Mr. Xiao Can-zong of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (+20-2-24184170), or the Taiwanese Representative Office in Jordan (+962-6-5544426; mobile +962-79-5552605). They may also dial the international toll-free number +886-800-085-095 to reach the “Ministry of Foreign Affairs Emergency Contact Center.”
