Travel Center / Comprehensive Report
With the arrival of the “Ghost Month” in the lunar seventh month, a ghost-themed café next to Liu’s Old House at Taiwan’s top-ranked haunted spot—the Minsyong Ghost House—recently invited the public to come paint ghosts, dress up as female ghosts and zombies to scare people, and help create a spooky atmosphere. The café also featured an exhibition by illustrator Xiao Shuaiwei, transforming a corner of the venue into a scene from a Western vampire movie.

The operators of the ghost-themed café said they organized the “Haunted Masterpieces” event to coincide with traditional Ghost Month, inviting students from Chiayi University’s Department of Visual Arts and members of the public to come paint their terrifying visions of ghosts both inside and outside the café—even on the toilets and sinks—creating a veritable “haunted house carnival.”
The operator noted that while the lunar seventh month might be a slower season for regular tourism, it’s peak time for haunted attractions across Taiwan. Every year during Ghost Month, the Minsyong Ghost House draws crowds of young thrill-seekers. This year, in addition to engaging students and the general public, they also invited well-known illustrator Xiao Shuaiwei to join in the fun. Xiao set up a large black cloth draped with candle holders and lit candles, creating the eerie ambience of a Western vampire film set and transforming a corner of the café into a chillingly spooky space.

Liu’s Old House is located in Yiqiao, Minsyong Township. Built over 80 years ago by the Liu family, it was a rare Western-style mansion at the time. After the descendants moved away and the house was left unattended, overgrown weeds added to its ghostly aura. Coupled with local rumors, the Minsyong Ghost House gained a notorious reputation and became a top choice for paranormal TV shows seeking ghostly encounters in previous years.
