Reopening a 30-Year-Old Grandpa’s Old Ice Shop, But Selling Original “Wacky Ice”

Grandpa’s Ice Shop Gets a Wacky Makeover: After taking over his grandfather’s 50-year-old ice shop in Caotun Township, Nantou County, boss Li Zhongshu of “Donghai Ice Shop” has launched a variety of “wacky” ice treats—from bizarre mint chocolate and tiramisu shaved ice to spicy shaved ice. He even created therapeutic shaved ice flavors named “Calm” and “Depressed.” Not only are the names quirky, but the flavors also differ from traditional ice desserts, often surprising customers who walk in.
Li Zhongshu said that his grandfather opened the ice shop 50 years ago, and the signature red bean milk ice was always highly praised by customers. After running it for 30 years, due to old age and no one from the second generation willing to take over, the shop eventually closed. Last year, he decided to bring back the “nostalgic taste,” reopening the old shop. To recreate the classic flavors, Li specially learned the craft from his grandfather—all toppings such as red beans, peanuts, and Job’s tears are handmade, and even the condensed milk is slowly simmered to perfection.

In addition to reviving the classic red bean milk ice, Li Zhongshu has also created various wacky ice treats. For example, the spicy shaved ice starts off cooling, then hits you with a strong kick of spice. “Customers take a bite of the spicy ice, feel the heat, then take another bite of the ice, repeating the cycle—it creates a fun contrast,” Li happily explained. He loves seeing the diverse expressions on customers’ faces after they try the ice, and they all find him amusing, making coming here for ice a joyful experience.

The shop’s ice treats are divided into categories: Wacky Series, Classic Series, Therapeutic Series, Fresh Series, and a birthday party edition exclusive for those celebrating their birthdays. Popular items in the Wacky Series include “Stingy Ice,” “Wacky Chocolate Mint,” and “Shaved Tiramisu.” The Therapeutic Series includes “Depressed Ice” and “Calm Ice.” Li pointed out that “Stingy Ice” may look plain—with just white shaved ice and a single sour plum—but it actually hides plenty of surprises inside. “Depressed” and “Calm” ice are perfect for people going through breakups.

Aside from ice treats, the shop also features colorful murals on the walls. Li said, “These were painted by an illustrator who has worked with author Guo Jingming.” With a pink-themed background, the murals are intentionally cozy, aiming to make everyone feel at home when they visit.
When asked why he sells wacky-flavored ice, Li said, “Selling traditional flavors all the time gets boring!” At first, his grandfather doubted whether customers would accept the new creations, but after personally tasting them and hearing positive feedback from customers, he gave his full approval. Now, Li continues to seek inspiration to develop even more “weird” ice treats.
