Feel the sea breeze and listen to the sound of the waves at Qialulan Recreation Area – enjoy the most beautiful ocean scenery

Qialulan Recreation Area is located at kilometer 157.7 on Provincial Highway 11. In addition to a large expanse of beautiful lawn, it also features rest pavilions and an observation deck. From the observation deck, you’ll be greeted by the deep blue sea meeting the sky — a stunning sea and sky horizon. The vast and profound Pacific Ocean sends waves rolling in toward you. With the sea breeze in your face, the sound of the waves in your ears, and the warm sunshine overhead, you can spend a truly relaxing time.


There are also many driftwood-based art installations in the area. Among them are two fish standing by the seaside, part of an installation artwork titled “My Good Friends,” which reads: “Welcome, traveler, and have a relaxed and pleasant journey!” Other artworks include “Window-like j?”, “Dance of Truth,” “Windmill Set,” and “Crying Dewdrop.” Even the decorations in the rest pavilions feature driftwood. Every summer and autumn, the Qialulan Handicraft Market gathers a group of East Coast art enthusiasts who come together in a market-style gathering at Qialulan. The event highlights creative works made from natural materials, including open-air film screenings and performances by local bands, allowing visitors to the East Coast to stroll through the market, share experiences, and immerse themselves in the natural, simple, creative, and passionate island ocean vibe.

Traveling along Provincial Highway 11 on the East Coast not only allows you to enjoy the beautiful coastal scenery of Taitung but also serves as an ideal stop for travelers. Take a moment to admire the most stunning Pacific Ocean sea and sky horizon, listen to the sound of the waves on the shore, and take in the expansive view while feeling the sea breeze — it’s one of the most delightful experiences possible.

Qialulan Rest Area features sea erosion landscapes, continuing with magnificent weathering and uniquely shaped reefs scattered across the area. The shoreline has distinctive textures, the space is expansive with no visual obstructions, and the lawn is soft. It has now become a must-visit destination on the East Coast.

Qialulan Recreation Area is located at kilometer 157.7 on Provincial Highway 11, right next to the Little Yehliu Scenic Area. There are many other well-known attractions nearby worth stopping to admire, such as the Water Flowing Uphill and the cultural charm of Donghe. Of course, you can’t miss the very famous “Donghe Meat Buns”!

After admiring the view for a long time, did you notice? With the movement of the clouds, the changing waves, and the shifting color temperature of the rising sun, it’s like a visual feast.

At Qialulan Recreation Area, where you can find the most beautiful ocean views, we specifically stayed here to welcome the dawn and wait for the morning sun to rise above the horizon...

In this large expanse of beautiful lawn, taking an evening stroll to watch the sunset and feel the sea breeze — I really wish there was a park this big near my home.

Stepping onto the observation platform, what lies ahead is the vast and profound Pacific Ocean coastline. As the clouds move and the waves change, the view never feels quite the same.

Qialulan Recreation Area boasts beautiful natural scenery, situated between mountains and sea. During the day, the views are magnificent and the vistas are wide. In the evening, colorful clouds fill the sky accompanied by a cool breeze. At night, it becomes an optimal spot for stargazing, moon viewing, and listening to the waves — all free from light pollution.

Sitting on a chair, while admiring the beautiful ocean view of the Pacific, the gentle sea breeze and the sound of the waves — especially when the layers of clouds linger on the horizon — create a breathtaking scene that is truly uplifting.

Walking along the lush green lawn while feeling the sea breeze is one of the most comfortable and joyful things to do. Aside from enjoying the natural scenery, there are also driftwood-based art installations such as “Window-like j?,” “Dance of Truth,” “Windmill Set,” and “Crying Dewdrop.”

I had been to Qialulan before, back when it was still under development. This time, being able to stand here and see the beautiful ocean view, coupled with the gentle sea breeze blowing in my face — how comforting is that feeling?

Located right next to the azure Pacific Ocean, with waves rolling in, it feels as if time has stopped — everything just pauses...

In the evening, we returned to Taitung’s second-largest port, Fugang Fishing Port. It’s the boarding point for trips to Green Island or Orchid Island. We weren’t going to take a boat this time, though. I remember the last time I went to Green Island was several years ago — those happy memories are still vivid in my mind. This time, we came to welcome friends returning from Orchid Island by boat.

Fugang Fishing Port is about two to three kilometers away from Qialulan Recreation Area. Every day, fishing boats come in loaded with fresh catch, and the port is a great place to sample fresh seafood. As an important harbor for traveling to Green Island and Orchid Island, Fugang Fishing Port gets especially crowded with tourists during holidays heading to the outlying islands.

We had talked about taking a boat to Green Island, and luckily we had taken motion sickness pills beforehand. Seeing several tourists experiencing seasickness was truly memorable. I remember that day when we set off for Green Island, the sea was extremely rough — the waves were almost higher than the boat.
From that moment on, we were really afraid of what it would be like coming back... Fortunately, the return trip was with the waves. Honestly? Seasickness is a terrifying thing — it can make you feel like death is better... I’m not trying to scare you, haha.

When the boat returned to Fugang Fishing Port, after the tourists disembarked, you could see smiles and signs of exhaustion on everyone’s faces. They couldn’t wait to get to their own cars or head to nearby seafood restaurants to indulge in the freshest and most delicious local seafood.

After welcoming our friends back to Taiwan, our stomachs started growling, so we headed to a nearby seafood restaurant and ordered a few simple yet delicious dishes.
