Hualien Yuli Noodles Festival: 53 Certified Delicious Noodle Shops Unveiled

Hualien’s Yuli rice is renowned far and wide, and the chewy, springy Yuli noodles are no less impressive. The 2013 Yuli Noodles Festival kicks off on the 25th, launching a food map to guide visitors in searching out a total of 53 locally acclaimed noodle shops. Tourists who dine at these establishments can join a one-month points collection campaign—collect five points for a chance to win great prizes such as tablets, computer monitors, and accommodation vouchers.

The county government states that Yuli noodles are extraordinarily delicious, guaranteed to whet visitors’ appetites and “draw them off their horses.” Over 50 Yuli noodle shops populate the small town, making it a local specialty snack. The defining feature of Yuli noodles lies in their springy yellow wheat noodles, served in a rich pork bone broth, topped with a generous handful of bean sprouts and three slices of pork, finished with a sprinkle of chopped scallions for added flavor. Some shops even use fried shallots to enhance the aroma.

Starting now, the Hualien Railway Station Visitor Service Center, local hotels, and all 53 participating shops in Yuli Town are offering the food map. The public can also visitthe event’s official websiteto download it. Dine at participating shops before October 24, collect five points, and you can enter the lucky draw. The draw will be held on the 31st, with the list of winners announced on the Hualien County Tourism Information Network.

The county government also points out that southern Hualien boasts abundant tourism resources, including the Yuli Chikeshan area, known as the “Little Switzerland of the East,” and Fuli’s Liushitashan Mountain, blanketed in golden daylily blossoms. The areas around Ruisui and Yuli also feature premium hot spring resorts. In terms of agricultural products, Yuli rice, coffee, pomelos, and honey-scented black tea are all must-try delicacies.
