Witnessing a Century of Splendor: Alishan Hotel Celebrates Its 100th Anniversary

Alishan Hotel is 100 years old this year. Located within the Alishan National Scenic Area, the hotel is celebrating its centennial anniversary. From now until December 30th, it will present thrilling Thao ethnic cultural performances as themed events every Saturday and Sunday. To recreate the hotel’s century-old charm, management is inviting the public to share vintage photos of the hotel—those who provide images older than 20 years can enjoy discounted accommodation.

According to management, Alishan Hotel was built in 1913 (the second year of the Taishō era in Japan), making it Taiwan’s highest-altitude historic building and resort hotel with a century-long legacy. Nestled high in the mountains and surrounded by peaks, the hotel offers views of natural scenery such as cherry blossoms, sea of clouds, and sunset glow. The famed sunrise of Alishan and the scenic forest railway can also be enjoyed from here.

Originally called the “Alishan Club,” the hotel was constructed during the Japanese colonial period when the Japanese developed Alishan. It has been operated under contract since 2003 and currently has 139 guest rooms. To celebrate its 100th birthday, guests who provide photos of the hotel aged between 20 and 30 years can enjoy a 50% discount on room rates before the end of December. The older the photo, the greater the discount—with photos over 60 years old eligible for a free one-night stay in the century-old cypress-view suite.
