"Rime" is one of China's four major natural landscapes, and if you want to see the most beautiful rime in China, you absolutely must visit Rime Island. Located in Jilin, China, Rime Island is a pristine white expanse in the Northeast. From December to February each year, trees along the Songhua River become thickly frosted, resembling ice and snow sculptures from afar. Because the formation of rime is highly dependent on weather conditions, this “luck-dependent” beauty becomes even more precious — a winter spectacle in Northeast China that you must see in your lifetime.

Rime is a natural phenomenon where water vapor in the air freezes on trees when temperatures drop below minus 20 degrees Celsius — and without strong winds — visible only before sunrise when temperatures begin to rise. Surrounded by the perennially unfrozen Songhua River and with winter temperatures around minus 20 to 30 degrees Celsius, Rime Island in Jilin Province in Northeast China is the premier destination for viewing rime in China. Every winter, despite the harsh cold, countless tourists brave the elements to witness one of China’s four great natural wonders.

There’s a saying: “Watch the mist at night, see the rime form in the morning, and enjoy the falling petals near noon.” This describes the daily transformation of rime. In the early morning, rime clings to tree branches, making them look like crystal flowers clustered together. By daytime, the frost on the trees melts slightly in the sunlight, sparkling brilliantly as if dusted with diamonds. By evening, the rime begins to fall like snowflakes, transforming once again.
