Successful Restoration: Fiddler Crabs, Dubbed "Red Tube Fairies," Swarm Dapeng Bay

"Armies of Fiddler Crabs" Spotted in Dapeng Bay!\xa0The Dapeng Bay National Scenic Area Administration in Pingtung has recently discovered that large numbers of fiddler crabs appear daily on the sandy beach and intertidal zone in front of the visitor center, following a highly regular pattern of "working at sunrise and resting at sunset." Commonly known as "Red Tube Fairies," these fiddler crabs, with their vibrant orange-red claws and massive numbers, always immediately catch the attention of visitors when they appear in groups.

The Dapeng Bay Administration noted that the current appearance of fiddler crabs is actually the result of deliberate restoration efforts. Over 30 years ago, as Taiwan’s aquaculture industry boomed, local fish farms multiplied, and excessive development led to the damage of the original wetland ecology in the Donggang area. In recent years, with improved conservation awareness and the decline of the aquaculture industry, several artificial wetlands have been successfully restored, leading to the return of the fiddler crabs.

Fiddler crabs in the Dapeng Bay area emerge regularly to forage along with the tides, with hundreds to over a thousand appearing daily—especially during low tide when the beaches are covered with fiddler crabs and mudskippers, creating a spectacular sight. In the future, the Dapeng Bay Administration will also work with local wetland volunteers to continue restoration and conservation efforts, enabling the fiddler crabs to keep multiplying and truly form an "army of fiddler crabs."
