No Longer Just for Photos: Yilan’s “Jimmy Liao Zone” Offers Free Guided Tours

Yilan’s “Jimmy Liao Square” has been open for just over half a year and has already attracted more than 500,000 visitors, but many tourists come and go in a hurry, taking only a cursory glance. In response, the Yilan County Government has decided to launch free weekend guided tours of the new “Jimmy Liao Zone,” combining nearby attractions such as Zhongshan Park, the Yilan Distillery, and the Performing Arts Center. These tours will allow visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the area’s humanities, history, and ecological culture.

Yilan is the hometown of the renowned picture book artist, and the 100-plus-ping “Jimmy Liao Square” is Taiwan’s first-ever theme square dedicated to Jimmy Liao. Classic works by Jimmy Liao such as *Secrets in the Sky*, *The Underground City*, and *Turn Left, Turn Right*, which were originally hidden within the pages of books, have been transformed into real-life street art installations here.

The county government believes it’s a pity that many visitors only take photos and leave. Therefore, it has linked nearby attractions—including Diudiuang Square, Zhongshan Park, the Performing Arts Center, the Yilan County Magistracy Memorial Hall, and the Yilan Distillery—to form the “Jimmy Liao Zone.” Tour guides have been trained, and free fixed-point guided tours are now available on weekends.

The county government stated that in addition to fixed-point guided tours, group interpretation services are also available by advance reservation.
