Keep admiring the creations of “Rainbow Grandpa”! Taichung’s Rainbow Village transforms into an art park

Taichung’s cultural and creative attraction “Rainbow Village” is filled with vibrant murals, all hand-painted by 92-year-old amateur artist Huang Yung-fu. Originally facing demolition due to urban redevelopment, the site gradually gained attention through online promotion. Recently, the Taichung City Cultural Affairs Bureau invested tens of millions to transform it into the “Taichung Rainbow Art Park,” which officially opened to the public. Not only have Grandpa Huang’s colorful artworks been preserved, but the park also now includes public restrooms and recreational facilities, giving the area a completely renewed look.

Known as “Rainbow Grandpa,” Huang Yung-fu lived in the military dependents’ village of Qianchengliu in Nantun District. Feeling that all the villages looked the same, one day he picked up a paintbrush and began doodling colorful murals on the walls of community buildings and along the roads. Later, he became “addicted to painting,” and soon the entire village became his “graffiti canvas.” After word spread online, the site gained fame and attracted large numbers of visitors coming to pay homage, making it a well-known cultural and creative attraction in Taichung.

As Rainbow Village is located within a redevelopment zone, it faced the threat of demolition and reconstruction. However, the city government believed that Huang Yung-fu’s paintings touched people’s hearts and brought joy to many. Later, through an urban redevelopment adjustment, the village was preserved in the form of a park, and funding was allocated to transform it into an art park. Upon hearing the news, Huang Yung-fu happily said he never dreamed the village could become a rainbow park.

Previously, visitors could tour the village in about 10 minutes, but now, with the addition of the art park, they can stay longer. The new public restrooms and recreational facilities also make the visit more convenient. The Cultural Affairs Bureau stated that in the future, it will not only host cultural and artistic events but also arrange performances by street artists. They have also invited Rainbow Grandpa to continue creating, aiming to turn the Rainbow Art Park into a new hub of Taichung’s cultural creativity.
