Penghu Issues Consumption Vouchers: “NT$1,100 Subsidy per Person for a 3-Day Trip” – Sold Out in Less Than a Month

To attract more visitors during the winter season, Penghu County Government has allocated NT$16.4 million since November 21 to issue consumption vouchers. Any non-local who stays for a three-day-two-night trip in Penghu is eligible for a subsidy of NT$1,100 per person. The Penghu County Government Tourism Department stated that all the vouchers were claimed by December 13, estimated to have drawn 16,307 tourists and generated NT$114.15 million in local economic value.

Most people assume Penghu is only worth visiting in the summer. To extend the tourism boom from summer and autumn, the Penghu County Government launched the “2017 Winter Tourism Consumption Voucher for Visitors” campaign. Non-locals staying for a three-day-two-night trip in Penghu can receive 11 tourism consumption vouchers (each worth NT$100), totaling NT$1,100; those staying for a two-day-one-night trip can get 5 vouchers (each NT$100), totaling NT$500.

The total budget for the voucher campaign was NT$16.4 million. It was originally scheduled to run from November 21 to February 10, 2018, with vouchers valid until February 12, 2018. However, in less than a month, all the vouchers were claimed by December 13. The last two claimants were Ms. Huang and Ms. Tsai from Kaohsiung, who redeemed NT$500 worth of vouchers.

The county’s Tourism Department reported that the campaign attracted an estimated 16,307 tourists. Based on an average spending of NT$7,000 per person, it generated approximately NT$114.15 million in local economic value, invigorating Penghu’s winter tourism industry and heating up the off-season market.

The consumption voucher campaign has concluded and currently there are no further issuance plans. The county government will continue to develop sustainable activities based on the campaign. For example, on January 6, January 13, and January 20 (2018), three editions of the Headwind Cross-Sea March will be held, combining military heritage tours, marching picnics, and military performances. These experiences aim to encourage both domestic and international tourists to visit Penghu and march across Taiwan’s longest cross-sea bridge against the wind.

All participants will receive marching challenge kits, including camouflage waterproof backpacks, marching tattoo stickers, combat rations, and field meals. Those who complete the cross-sea march will be awarded a marching certificate. Registration is open now until December 31.
