As spring arrives and flowers bloom in full splendor, Nantou’s Shanlinxi recently saw not only vibrant peonies in full bloom but also the rare emergence of Taiwan’s uncommon “crystal orchids.” Unlike most varieties, these mostly white and semi-translucent crystal orchids grow in dark, shaded areas. Therefore, visitors must avoid direct sunlight and bend down to search for the flowers in the faint light. The best time to view them is from March to May.

In fact, the crystal orchid is not an orchid at all, but a rare plant belonging to the Monotropaceae (or Pyrolaceae) family. Its blossoms are crystal-clear with a hint of pink, and its stigma is funnel-shaped. More unusually, the crystal orchid does not perform photosynthesis and contains no chlorophyll, meaning it can only survive in the faint light of the forest.

With an altitude of about 1,600 meters, Shanlinxi is one of the main growing areas for crystal orchids in Taiwan. Visitors wishing to see the flowers can head to the park’s Taiwan azalea forest. Since the crystal orchids are quite small, visitors need to walk slowly and search carefully to avoid missing them. Currently, the Shanlinxi area also has blooming peonies and azaleas, with the flowering period expected to last until May.
