Taiwan’s Halal Travel and Hospitality Certification Reaches 50 Establishments — Theme Parks and Ice Cream Shops Also Included

Over 150,000 Muslim tourists visited Taiwan in 2013, generating approximately US$250 million in tourism revenue. Starting February 10, 2014, Emirates Airlines added a new direct flight from Dubai to Taiwan, expected to bring even more visitors. The Tourism Bureau stated that there are now 50 hospitality businesses across Taiwan that have obtained the “Halal Travel and Hospitality Certification,” including star-rated hotels, theme parks, and various restaurants, aiming to attract more Muslims to visit Taiwan.

The Tourism Bureau pointed out that due to Islam’s specific dietary regulations, these must also be followed when traveling abroad, meaning restaurants and hotels around the world must accommodate them as well. Among star-rated hotels, 11 have joined the certification program, including The Landis Taipei, Taipei Silks Place, Regent Taipei, Taipei Grand Hyatt, Kaohsiung Grand Hyatt, NICE Prince Hotel, and Hualien Harbour Hotel. Currently, a total of 11 five-star, 3 four-star, and 2 three-star hotels have been certified. In addition to offering delicious cuisine, they also provide international-level room services.

The eight certified restaurants this time include Chinese set meals at Window on China Theme Park, Halal Yellow Beef Noodles, Really Good Seafood Restaurant, as well as international cuisines from Indonesia, India, and the Middle East. Notably, Taiwan’s popular “ice shop” (Ice Monster) has also made the list.

The Tourism Bureau stated that it will continue to work with the Chinese Muslim Association of the Republic of China to guide more hospitality businesses in obtaining Halal certification. Through advice from Islamic experts and training for service staff, they aim to maintain high standards. The certification is valid for one year and is reviewed annually to ensure the dining environment continues to meet required standards.
