Customized sky lanterns are all the rage – Pingxi’s “Police Sky Lantern Show” adds extra shows starting April 10

The “Pingxi Substation of Ruifang Precinct, New Taipei City Police Department,” whose architecture resembles a giant sky lantern, has become a new local landmark since its opening on White Day this year (2014). The “Police Sky Lantern Show,” which begins at 6 p.m., has been especially popular. To allow more people to experience the charm of customized LED wish sky lanterns, additional shows starting at 4 p.m. will be held from April 10 onward.

The Pingxi Substation is nicknamed the “Sky Lantern Police Station” because its exterior is designed to resemble the area’s iconic sky lanterns. Its biggest attraction is the “Police Light Show,” which runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Visitors can write their wishes or attach their photos to a Police Sky Lantern postcard, which staff will then input. They can then watch their wishes rise up the large LED sky lantern screen on the building’s exterior. The customized sky lantern service has been a refreshing experience for many visitors.

Due to its popularity, the “Police Light Show” will add extra performances starting April 10, beginning at 4 p.m. instead of 6 p.m. and running until 9 p.m., with shows ending at 8 p.m. on holidays. The New Taipei City Tourism and Travel Bureau has also launched a limited “Light Up Happiness Ticket Set” for NT$300, which includes one Police Sky Lantern release voucher and NT$300 in shopping vouchers. The vouchers can be used at over 130 local shops in the area. The set is now on sale and will be available until June 13.
