Find a traffic light to get online? 250 Taitung Free hotspots offer free Wi-Fi

Recently, sharp-eyed locals noticed a white box attached to a traffic light signal in downtown Taitung, sparking curiosity about what it was. It turns out to be a “Wi-Fi network transmitter.”(Photo provided by Taitung travel expert Chen Bingyuan)

Li Chung-lin from the Information Section of the Taitung County Government’s Planning Department explained that due to Taitung’s vast area and underdeveloped commerce and industry, many travelers have found it inconvenient to get online while visiting. As a result, the county government applied for central government funding to install 250 free Wi-Fi hotspots across Taitung County.

Li also noted that the 250 hotspots require 24-hour power supply to maintain stable signals, so they must be installed on equipment such as traffic lights to ensure signal reliability.Currently, about 70 of the 250 hotspots have been completed. The county government expects to finish installing all of them by mid-July this year and will open them for public use at the same time.
